The Hunter Information

The Hunter the most common and most agile of the special infected or all the infected for that matter in Left4Dead. They can pounce up to great heights causing massive damage based on distance. Hunters emit a growl as they setup for a pounce otherwise they are just as silent as any ninja. A hunters pounce will pin a survivor unable to defend themselves until a fellow survivor helps them out by shooting or meleeing the hunter off. Hunters are by far the most distracting infected and can steal alot of attention by punching around. Hunters have a decent amount of health and are fairly sturdy when compared to the Smoker, Boomer, or the Common infected. A lone survivor pinned is likely a dead survivor.Wait for them to come around corners and melee them at close range. Pounces can be timed for a melee attack to bounce them back but lag can interfere with this a good rule of thumb is melee slightly before they pounce or slightly after if they are a good distance away. The timing can be rather tricky but with some practice it's easy as pie!

The Hunter Description

For a special infected hunters can be mistaken for common infected in a hoard due to appearence. Howvever they wear stylish but roughed up grey - ish black hoodie which is their most identifying feature! They wear brown kakis and heavy leather black boots. Hunters stand about as tall as a common infected. They have a lean muscular figure built to handle long distance pounces with great agility. They have no I'll regular running animation unlike smokers. Hunters crouching and pouncing an easy way to pick them out of a hoard infested crowd. But one just running can be difficult to pick out of the bunch!

The Hunter Claw and Melee Damage

  • 10 damage on easy
  • 10 damage on normal
  • 20 damage on advanced
  • 40 damage on expert

The Hunter Pounce

  • A Hunter may crouch at any time to begin the short timer on a pounce.
  • During the crouch the hunter moves very slowly.
  • During a crouch a hunter makes growling noises.
  • High distance or Long Distances Pounces can do alot of damage.
  • During a pounce a hunter can rebound off walls.
  • Setting up a pounce backwards against a wall while looking up will let you wall rebound off the same building as long as you hold backwards and continue to pounce.
  • Any time during a pounce you tag the survivors hit box you pin the survivor and quickly rack with your claws.
  • A pinned survivor must be killed or meleed off to release a survivor from a pin.
  • If you can pin a survivor being pulled off an edge will force a death if the height is right.
  • make note as a hunter during a pounce that connects you are dedicated to the pounce until killed or meleed.
  • Survivors that anticipate the much closer hunter hit box can block a hunter pounce more easily.
  • Hunter (s) are most effective pouncing individual targets in with coordinated attacks with other infected
  • During a crouch the hunter is a low profile target
  • Hunters pounce in the direction they aim they can use this to reach great heights

The Hunter Stealth and Melee Attacks

  • The Hunter is the only special infected who can remain completely silent.
  • Survivors that have a Boomer's bile on them are perfect targets to blend into with the common infected.
  • A Hunter not committed to a survivor pin can use hit and run tactics with its melee attack
  • A Hunter can double team a pinned survivor that another hunter has pinned or a smoker has entangled for a quicker more focused incapacitation.
  • The Hunter 's stylish hood makes perfect camouflage for areas that aren't brightly lit
  • A Hunter 's melee attack can hit multiple survivors in close proximity
  • A Hunter can be hard to distinguish from common infected due to stance, size, silence, and physic!

Hunter Strategies

  • When a Hunter pounces a survivor that survivor cannot take any action against the hunter. Unless a fellow survivor deals with the hunter by knocking him off ect. Due to this hunters should coordate with other special infected to attack seperate targets at the same time. If you can accomplish this the infected will win.
  • Combining your damage on a single survivor sometimes be beneficial because in will incapacitate him/her more quickly. A perfect example of this would be a smoker pulls survivor Ellis away from the other survivors and it will take them only a few seconds to reach him. The hunter can speed up the process by meleeing the survivor while he is grabbed with the smoker's tongue. So he can already be incapped before they arrive to save him or even dead in some cases.
  • You can coordinate with spitters to pounce on a survivor and immediately have a spitter spit on the exact area where you have pounced a survivor. The spitters spit does progressive damage based on how long a survivor is within it during its duration. This prevents other survivors from immediately saving the survivor due to this damage or even better or worse depending on your role incapping another survivor in the process.
  • Hunters can use their pounces to scale walls very quickly by pouncing from wall to wall or the same wall with a backwords method of backing up until the wall and aiming straight up so you can wall jump all the way up on a single wall. This is important because it directly effects how much damage a pounce can produce. A few high up pounces can make or break any verses match in Left 4 Dead.
  • Avoid pouncing a target that is alone because after the initial pounce you will be likely immediately killed by other survivors. Unless of course the survivor is alone and it will take the survivors a little time to save him. You have long respawn counter in verses so it is important to make each count.

Counter Hunter Strategies

  • Try to always stay close to one another if a survivor gets pounced try to be close enough to melee him off of the survivor in the lead or the rear of the survivor marching order. They are the most likely to get pounced simple due to perspective of them being in front or behind. As a rule of thumb the closest survivor to the hunter is likely it's intended target. Once you hear a hunter prepare to melee your allies quickly while someone trys to snipe the hunter.
  • Always be aware of your surroundings if a hunter is jumping around close but out of range with no real purpose or stratgey that is apprent to you he might be destracting you from another special infected.
  • Try to stay out of the open in an area with high ledges that a hunter can pounce a survivor easily. Pounces can deal a ton of damage that can make or break a verses match or campaign.
  • Try to force the special infected to attack you one at a time if possible you can bait a hunter, jokey, and/or smoker. By faking being alone. Survivors that remain still with no flashlight on will be invisible behind obstructions to special infected. Use this by having a survivor look like he/she is all alone. Unless the special infected is very observent he/she will likely attack the survivor and you spring your trap. It is very important that you coordnate with your team to give such an illusion to make this tactic possible.
  • Communication is the most important lifeline between survivors for any obsticle. Microphones are ideal as you are helpless during the period you are typing. If you are pounced by a hunter let everyone know about it immediately. I cannot name the number of times I have seen survivors leave someone behind them without realizing it only to have him/her incapacitated.
